The William Reid Stakes is one of the country’s coveted Group 1 races. It takes place annually during the Autumn Racing Carnival at the picturesque Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne.

The 2013 William Reid Stakes will run as a night race on Friday 25th March 2013 at Moonee Valley along with the Group 2 Sunline Stakes.

Up until 2010 the William Reid Stakes was known as the Group 1 Australia Stakes, before it’s race name was once again changed back to be the William Reid Stakes. This race should not be confused with a Group 2 race that also runs at Moonee Valley in late January called the Australia Stakes.
William Reid Stakes Lead Up Races:
The Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington is an ideal prelude for the William Reid Stakes with a number of star sprinters completing this double including Apache Cat in 2008 and Miss Andretti the previous year in 2007.
In-form runners may also be raced in the Group 1 C F Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.
William Reid Stakes History:
Formerly known as the Australia Stakes from 1996 to 2009, the William Reid Stakes is named after the prominent racehorse owner and Victorian banker William Reid and was first run in 1925.
The William Reid Stakes was once a leg of the prestigious Global Sprint Challenge during 2005 to 2007 when the race was called the Australia Stakes.
The Australia Stakes reverted back to its original name in 2010 and gained its prestigious Group 1 status in 1987.
