Black Caviar Scratched From 2010 William Reid Stakes – Nicconi New Favourite

February 11th, 2010

Hot favourite for this Saturday’s $500 000 Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m), unbeaten filly Black Caviar, has been scratched from the feature sprint event and spelled for up to 12 months in a shocking turn of luck.

Trained by Peter Moody, the promising three-year-old filly was considered a shoe-in for the event after winning all of her previous five race starts, but a leg injury has prevented her from running not only on Saturday but in any event until at least spring.

It is not the first time injury has marred the brilliant horse’s chance in a Group 1 feature as she was withdrawn from the Blue Diamond Stakes last year due to muscle tears.

Last start Lightning Stakes winner, the David Hayes-trained Nicconi is now the odds-on favourite for Saturday’s William Reid Stakes at $3.

Moody still has Wanted engaged in the William Reid Stakes. The Lightning Stakes second placegetter is drawn well in barrier two and is currently close second favourite at $3.50.

As Black Caviar was drawn in barrier nine, none of the gates change for the remaining runners.

A strong and determined runner, Black Caviar is well positioned to make a full recovery and will hopefully resume her impressive career next year.
