Turffontein Wins 2010 William Reid Stakes

February 15th, 2010

On Saturday at Moonee Valley racecourse the Anthony Cummings-trained Turffontein claimed a shock victory in the $500 000 Group 1 Pulse Pharmacy William Reid Stakes (1200m), becoming a dual Group 1 winner.

The star five-year-old started at generous odds of $12 and with champion hoop Glen Boss aboard ran to the line first defeating a gallant Wanted ($4.60) by half a neck with Sniper’s Bullet ($11) a fast finishing third just a short neck back.

It was a bitter sweet finish for Wanted’s trainer Peter Moody. Following the scratching of the hot pre-race favourite Black Caviar, Moody’s best chance of success lay in three-year-old Wanted. Wanted ran well to place second but is still chasing that elusive Group 1 win following a string of minor placings including second in the Lightning Stakes.

It was a disappointing finish for the odds-on favourite, the David Hayes-trained Nicconi ($3). The winner of the Lightning Stakes could only manage sixth as his inside draw and the slow pace of Saturday’s race worked against him. Despite the less than ideal run Hayes still plans to take Nicconi to England for the King’s Stand Stakes (100m) at Royal Ascot in June.

The winning son of Johannesburg defeated a field of some of the country’s best sprinters after sitting just off the tempo set by pacesetter Light Fantastic ($6.50), the grey gelding later finishing fifth. Turffontein made his move coming into the last turn, gaining the lead at the 400m mark.

Turffontein has now won five of his 30 career starts, including last spring’s Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield and has amassed over $1.23 million in prizemoney.

The next big race on the agenda for Turrfontein following his impressive win on Saturday will be the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on March 6 at Flemington.

Meanwhile Master O’Reilly ($101) impressed trainer Danny O’Brien with a solid first-up fifth place and will now move on to the Australian Cup.
