A talented field of 10 has accepted to appear in the featured 2014 Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) this evening, with talented Caulfield Cup champion Fawkner poised to make his first-up appearance for the year at Moonee Valley Racecourse.
While yet to reach peak form over two starts in 2014, talented sprinter Samaready has opened and maintained as leader in betting markets for the 2014 William Reid Stakes at a current quote of $4, ahead of Shamexpress ($5), Gregers and clear market mover Thump, sharing the third line of betting at $5.50.
Can Samaready return to form and claim the William Reid Stakes, or will one of her classy opponents get the job done and claim a maiden Group 1 title this season?
Having amassed six wins and two places from only 11 race starts to date, Samaready has been one of the most consistent Australian performers since debuting on course in late 2011, most notably claiming wins in the 2012 Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) last preparation. Producing a strong run for third in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) first-up on February 15th, the More Than Ready was unable to match the late pace of Lankan Rupee in the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) last time out, and finished a disappointing sixth. Jockey Craig Newitt has partnered Samaready in all race starts so far, and is confident of returning to form from the inside barrier this evening.
Shamexpress was unable to defend his 2013 Newmarket Handicap crown when fourth in the 2014 edition last time out, but has returned to the track in competitive form, having finished second in the Lightning Stakes (1000m) first-up. Trainer Danny O’Brien believes the O’Reilly entire has drawn the ideal lane in barrier 7 for the William Reid Stakes, who will again be partnered by leading jockey Damien Oliver.
Having claimed the 2013 Caulfield Cup in impressive fashion, Fawkner represents incredible value to punters at current $18 odds, despite being first-up. Finishing third behind equine superstar Black Caviar in the 2013 edition of the William Reid Stakes, Fawkner is proven over the distance and track but will need to overcome the wide barrier 10 if any chance of figuring in the dying stages of tonight’s feature race. In-form jockey Craig Williams has been confirmed to take the ride on the Reset gelding for only the second time.
