Unable to make much of an impact when missing the start in last weekend’s Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m), trainer Tony McEvoy has revealed he is considering a berth in the 2015 William Reid Stakes (1200m) with sprinter Iconic.
Fitted with a barrier blanket, McEvoy was confident of a positive start and polished performance from the Bel Esprit gelding in the Oakleigh Plate, but was left disappointed when the four-year-old again failed to make an impression from the outset.
Revealing he was more pleased with Iconic’s performance in transit despite eventually finishing a forgettable 12th, McEvoy told Racing Ahead his proven affinity with the Moonee Valley track underlines the 2015 William Reid Stakes on March 27th as a viable option.
“He missed the start and the race was over – you can’t do that in this quality of race,” McEvoy said.
“I thought he ran ok but I’ve just got to do a lot of work to get this horse to jump away cleanly.
“I’ll probably head him towards the William Reid; he does love Moonee Valley and ran very well in the Manikato there.”
Posting a commendable race record of four wins and a further five minor place finishes from his eight competitive starts so far, Iconic was a standout performer over his maiden preparation through the 2013 autumn, highlighted by a close second place finish in the Group 3 National Stakes (1200m).
Returning in 2014 with a luckless run for fifth in a Caulfield sprint over 1000m in late January, Iconic finished a notable second to Lankan Rupee in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) before failing to match the pace in the Oakleigh Plate a fortnight later.
Arguably finding career-best form so far through the 2014 Spring Carnival, the gelding out of Danavia won the Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) first-up; progressing to second in the Listed Wylie Quality (1100m) and fourth in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m) most notably.
