Berry Booked to Ride Earthquake in 2015 William Reid Stakes

March 24th, 2015

Earthquake returned to impressive form when placing a close second to Pittsburgh Flyer in the Listed MSS Security Stakes (1100m) last time out, and has been confirmed to be partnered by in-form hoop Tommy Berry in Friday’s Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

Posting an exceptional race record of five wins and a further four minor place finishes over just eleven competitive starts, Earthquake left outright favourite to take out the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) first-up this time but was unable to take advantage of light weights; finishing a forgettable tenth.

Godolphin have reportedly been thrilled with the form and class displayed by the daughter of Exceed And Excel since her most recent hit-out, and Melbourne operations manager David Charles is confident the addition of Berry will see the best possible chance of a return to the winner’s circle in the 2015 William Reid Stakes.

“We were very happy with her work, she’s made great progress since her second placing at Flemington and we’re looking forward to Friday night,” Charles told Racing Victoria.

“She’s had a relatively quiet week on the track leading into this week and we’re quite lucky that we’re able to come out here to Moonee Valley and use a perfect surface to have a gallop around and top her off for Friday.”

Debuting with an impressive three length victory in a minor over 1000m in late 2013, Earthquake returned in 2014 in exceptional condition; taking out the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude F (1100m) first-up before breaking through for a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).

Continuing her perfect career start through the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) and returning to the paddock following a close second-place finish in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), Earthquake could only manage third place finishes in both the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) upon resuming in spring, but returned to the winner’s circle in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200mk) on October 11th.

Included amongst a nominations list of 23 on Monday, Earthquake is expected to be named in the 2015 William Reid Stakes final field of 14 following Wednesday’s barrier draw.
