Talented sprinter Rebel Dane was unlucky not to return to the winner’s circle over a strong 2014 Australian racing campaign, but is offered a great chance of first-up success in Friday’s Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) after being confirmed to be partnered by leading jockey Craig Williams.
A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2013 edition of the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m), Rebel Dane has not been seen at the races since running on for a credible seventh amongst particularly talented company in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) on November 8th.
Bypassing the likes of Terravista, Chautauqua, Lankan Rupee and boom three-year-old Brazen Beau in lining up for the 2015 William Reid Stakes, Williams is thrilled to have picked up the ride on the classy five-year-old and is confident he is more than capable of first-up success on Friday.
“With his racing style he just needs to get luck at the right time. That’s all he needs to get,” Williams told AAP.
“He’s got to be ridden a certain way and if luck falls his way he can certainly win.”
Unable to replicate his Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes triumph in two proceeding starts in the 2013 spring, Rebel Dane returned to racing in typically slick form last autumn; running a close second to Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) first-up.
Placing a credible fifth in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) and fourth in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m), the California Dane entire returned for third place finishes in each of the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) in spring; placing an impressive fourth in a fanning finish in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) in his only other start prior to the Darley Classic.
The 2015 William Reid Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday today (Wednesday, March 25th).
